Grief The Great Yearning by Pat Bertram is not a how-to but a how-done, a compilation of letters, blog posts, and journal entries Pat wrote while struggling to survive her first year of grief. This is an exquisite book, wrenching to read, and at the same time full of profound truths.

Grief The Great Yearning by Pat Bertram is a book of empathic understanding. How many recently bereft have looked to society's guidelines for grieving and found these "norms" did not correspond to what they were feeling? How many were left confused and even more depressed because they were not "progressing" like the experts said they should? Bertram’s book is a comfort to those of us tossed into the grief whirlwind of disbelief and agony. The entire book is raw and real. Grief The Great Yearning is a companion guide from someone who has already been there. It is a forever love letter.
—J J Dare, author of False Positive and False World.

Grief The Great Yearning by Pat Bertram is a wonderful tribute to Jeff (Bertram’s deceased life mate/soul mate) and to Bertram’s own stamina.
—Malcolm R. Campbell, author of The Sun Singer and Sarabande

Everyone needs to read Grief A Great Yearning by Pat Bertram. It's the best grief book I've ever read, and I have read the Kübler-Ross books and The Year of Magical Thinking. Pat Bertram’s book feels like what most of us would experience, makes me feel what she is feeling, and it's written from the inside out.
—Brenda Buckner Wallace, author of Brilliant Prey

If people were to ask me for an example of how grief can be faced in order for the healthiest outcome, I would refer them to Grief The Great Yearning, which should be the grief process bible. Pat Bertram’s willingness to confront grief head on combined with her openness to change is the epitome of good mental health.”
—Leesa Healy, Consultant in Emotional-Mental Health.

Pat takes the reader on her journey through the most painful year of her life-the year following her beloved husband's death. Since her husband and mine died on the very same day, this was a journey through my own pain also. I have probably read 40 books on grief since I lost my husband and I found Pat's book to affirm the gut wrenching pain of a loss like this. Your book is a gem, an incredible gift to those who are grieving the loss of anyone they were really close to. I wish I had it in April of 2010....I looked for this kind of book at that time...one that would speak to the pain that fills each day. It reassured me that I was not alone or crazy. I recommend this book to anyone who is grieving or who loves someone who is grieving, especially the loss of a spouse or partner. Pat allows herself to be honest and vulnerable, sharing the painful pieces of her loss.

Grief The Great Yearning edition by Pat Bertram Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I was privileged to be able to review this book a few years ago, and have recommended it to numerous people since then. It's not a "how-to" book, but it helps more than some books I have read that were written by professional grief counsellors.
What a wonderful author Pat is. I found Grief The Great Yearning so well written and it shows you, as the reader, the full extent of grief at losing a loved one.

I totally recommend you read this author's books. She has a way with words and knows how to capture her reader right from the start.

Grief The Great Yearning is an emotional ride and I promise you, you will need a hankie when reading, but I am so glad I have read it and I wish Pat every success with this book.
Having just lost my spouse, this book has been like a friend sitting walking with me during this time of mental physical and spiritual upheaval. While the subject matter is anything but enjoyable -- Ms. Bertram's honesty and ability to articulate the reality of what it is that makes such a loss so unique is somehow comforting. When your spouse is gone, you've lost your life as well, and she is able to communicate the process of realizing how profound that truth is and how deep the dawning of awareness goes. She also wrestles with the contradictions that overnight are thrust upon one's strange new world -- she is functioning but with no desire to do so. Spousal loss suddenly marks time, the music stops, and you are the one left behind with no place to call home. It doesn't matter what you do, the reality is what it is. A love partnership exists in a preview of eternity that makes time less relevant. When one's soulmate dies, heaven dissolves into mundane earth with the heavy burden of time and heartache of no relief in sight. There is no way to describe it except Grief The Great Yearning comes close.
This is a wonderful caring book. There is so much that I can relate to and the honesty is wonderful to hear since I have had the same feelings.
Best book I have read on Grief. It actually talks about feelings on a day to day basis. I would recommend this book to anyone who just lost a husband.
This book was written for people like me Four months ago, I also lost my soul mate, lover, wife, best friend. This book has been a hugely important resource for me, as I appreciate how well she expresses the feelings that I have, helping me understand them. She inspired me to keep my own journal. I haven't actually finished it, since I'm only reading as far as she was, in her process. But at four months, there is a marvelous analysis of grief itself, emphasizing that only those unfortunate enough to experience it, can understand it.
I felt compelled to get through this book as quickly as possible looking forward to the end when I thought I would have an answer. What I learned is there is no answer, right or wrong, that what has happened to me happens to millions of others just differently and I will continue to live.
